CURSED PLAINS - A DARK ELF v UNDEAD BATTLE James & John

Across the endless plains think billowing mist twisted and curled, to obscure all but the closest landmarks. Entire armies could be lost in conditions like these so for the savvy army commander it paid to be fully aware of what was lurking nearby. That was the reason a small band of dark elf scouts were huddled together in a deserted cottage some miles south of the main force. In one corner of the main room Harrimi and Durtha were silently passing cards back and forth, whilst Mikar kept watch outside, and Yewtor attempted to start a fire in the ancient fireplace.
"Its no good" proclaimed Yewtor, "the wood is just too damp."
"Damn!" muttered Durtha, "this place is chillier than a cold one cavern in winter"
"Speaking of which, isn't it time for you to relieve Mikar" noted Harrimi.
Durtha groaned and pulled himself to his feet, but before he could make it to the door it was pushed aside by Mikar as he entered the cottage.
"Hey!" exclaimed Durtha, "I havnt come to relieve you yet, you should be at your post still"
"Er guys.." stumbled Mikar, "I've got a nasty feeling that somthing is out there, but I cant see a thing."
Instantly all the dark elves became alert, and there was a moment's silence while they all listened acutely.
"Ah, I cant hear anything" proclaimed Harrimi after a while, "theres just that creaking of the trees in the wind"
"Erm... " interjected Yewtor, "I hate to point this out, but there is no wind, and the only thing I've heard creak like that is..... bone .. on.... "

This is our third battle report Pitting My (James') Dark Elves against John's Undead Horde. An action packed 1000 point bloodfest (or bonefest possibly, we do have undead here) follows: read on!

Forces This battle pitted two 1000 point armies of evil against each other.
James' Dark Elf Raiders was made up of: A unit of cold one knights, a unit of harpies, a unit of warriors, a unit of crossbowmen, a repeater bolt thrower, and a general mounted on a cold one, who joined the cold one unit in battle.
John's Undead Horde numbered a unit of skeleton warriors, a unit of skeleton archers, a unit of ghouls, a unit of skeleton horsemen, a unit of mounted wights, 2 carrion, and a level 3 necromancer to lead.

Deployment Please refer to the map below.

Dark Elf Turn 1 As the battle kicked off the Harpies flew high above the battlefield, whilst the cold one knights and dark elf warriors advanced towards the enemy. In the shooting phase the bolt thrower destroyed 2 skeleton steeds, and a hail of fire from the crossbowmen (28 shots in total) cut down three of the advancing skeleton warriors. Magic was ineffective.

Undead Turn 1 With a shout from the necromancer, the carrion, ghouls and wights began their advance. The skeleton steeds charged the unit of warriors, killing 2 of the elves. Again, the winds of magic blew weak, so no magic was cast except use of the necromancers staff of damnation.

Dark Elf Turn 2 The Harpies swooped down from the sky to intercept the carrion, whilst the cold one knights adjusted their heading to face the oncoming wights. A bolt fired from the bolt thrower penetrated the necromancer's defences to cause him a wound. Meanwhile the harpies killed off one of the carrion, and wounded the other, while the warriors finished off the skeleton steeds.

Undead Turn 2 The remaining skeleton warriors charged the crosbowmen, and the mounted wights charged the cold one knights. Also the ghouls charged the already battle-locked harpies. Heavy armour on both sides saw no cold one knights or wights falling casualty, but the crossbowmen managed to cut down all the attacking skeletons. Still the winds of magic blew no more than a gentle breeze.

Dark Elf Turn 3 Finding no more enemies immediately available, the crossbowmen and dark elf warrior units both advanced fowards. Meanwhile the harpies were cut down in combat, and the cold one knights managed to kill a wight, and wound another. In the Magic phase the Staff of damnation gets one final usage before being exhausted.

Undead Turn 3 The mounted necromancer charged the crossbowman unit, and the remaining carrion charged the annoying bolt thrower, whilst the ghouls took on the dark elf warrior unit. In combat, the necromancer won the combat, and then chased down and slaughtered the entire crossbowman unit, and the carrion killed a bolt thrower crewman. Meanwhile the cold one knights killed another wight, and the dark elf warriors slaughtered the remaining ghouls.

Dark Elf Turn 4 The Dark elf warrior unit attacked the small unit of skeleton archers, responsible for a couple of dark elf deaths earlier on, cutting down and slaughtering the animated skeltons. Meanwhile the other bolt thrower crewman was killed off by the carrion.

Undead Turn 4 The necromancer charged the unit of cold one knights, challenging the dark elf general to a duel, which was duly accepted. Unfortunatly for the necromancer this merely resulted in another wound. In the magic phase the undead finally found some luck, drawing a total power card, which was used to send wind of death accross the cold one unit, causing the deaths of a cold one knight, and the cold one champion. As the howls of their souls being sucked into the realm of chaos died away the battle was over, and it was time to determine the victor.

Conclusion The final victory point count totaled up to:
DARK ELVES - 6 Victory points
UNDEAD - 5 Victory points
A victory for the followers of Khaine.

The Aftermath - Dark Elves Glory to Khaine! The bones of those defeated today will be thown on the fire in a grand victory ceremony! While its always nice to win, there were a few things I feel I could have done better. To be honest I was lucky that in general the magic rolls were so low, and it was a mistake letting my cold one knights get charged, as I ended up in a position where they were behind the warriors, and had to remanoever. Still it's a testimony to their toughness that they were able to take the heat, and not lose any casulties until right at the end. My star preformer award however has to go to my unit of humble warriors. Due to their large rank bonus, the inclusion of a standard and their skill in combat they managed to cut down three enemy units! Not bad I must say!

The Aftermath - Undead To follow shortly

Photos Photos of the battle have been taken, and will be added as soon as the film is used up and developed.

MY TAU BATTLE REPORT U571sniper

Introduction:
Here's my battle report. It pits the Tau against the Barbaric Orks.

The Battle:
Get down! Commander Shattuck Yelled. Ork Shoota fire roared overhead of the Fire Warriors, killing one. "Return fire!" Hundreds of Plasma Orbs tore into the ork lines killing 5 boyz and wounding a nob. THe broadside suits fired a quick salvo at an ork battlewagon, killing 2 of the crew. The battlewagon retaliated by killing 1 pathfinder and 2 fire warriors with its massive bolters. The orks jeered at the tau warriors, but victory was short lived, as the luminous shape of a hammerhead gunship appeared. A powerful plasma salvo downed a killa kan and its burst cannons took 1 shoota boy. The orks charged."Waaaaaaaaagh!" 4 fire warriors fell to ork fire and another 2 to a crude ork stikkbomb. The ork battlewagon was blown to bits by a well placed round from a broadside suit." For the greater good!" shouted Commander Shattuck.

A tau stealth team killed the wounded nob but in turn lost 2 of their own to a duo of ork rokkit launchers. Ork lootas killed 2 more pathfinders with stolen heavy bolters and lascannons. The tau returned fire with pulse rifles blaring, killing 3 more of the vile orks. The hammerhead fired at the dreadknought stepping out from behind the bush, but the shot was wide. The dreadknought, though, did not miss and crippled the gunship. The ork warboss killed an advancing pathfinder, only to be dropped by a broadside round, wounded. The ork doc tried to save him, but in his experimenting, sadly killed him. At this news, the orks fled, screaming "you havent heard the last of us!"

Conclusion: Tau Wins!
